Three-dimensional photonic crystals have properties that can be useful for detecting physical deformations. Compared with 3D polymer photonic crystals with weak color and high viewing angle dependence, inorganic core-shell particles promise high color purity and reflectivity.<br/>In this study, iron oxide particles (130-160nm) having a high refractive index were prepared through hydrothermal synthesis and then silica was coated with the Stober method. Homogeneously synthesized inorganic particles can be arranged into highly ordered hybrid films using melt shear techniques. Inorganic particle core materials featuring smart soft/hard shell polymers enhance photonic crystal film preparation and provide convenient access to novel photonic materials as sensing platforms.
