The second part of the tutorial will review the present status and engineering challenges of different caloric refrigeration and heat pump technologies. It will present a framework to estimate the performance of caloric regenerative cycles, and describe loss mechanisms and trade-offs between shape, size, operating frequency and materials properties. The tutorial will therefore address and explain the main obstacles faced by these emerging technologies, and introduce potential solutions. Finally, future research directions and actions that are needed to overcome the existing barriers toward real market applications will be considered.
