The first part of the tutorial will start providing a general introduction to caloric effects and caloric materials. It will review the fundamental and phenomenological theories that underpin caloric effects, and it will be shown that giant caloric effects occur in the vicinity of phase transitions. Results will be illustrated for giant magnetocaloric, electrocaloric and mechanocaloric materials. Finally the relevance of dissipative effects and hysteresis will be considered.
