Surface alloy is a surface-confined mixture of different metals that are not miscible in bulk phase. Since it is a new type of alloy formed at the surface, it offers a new way to promote surface-confined reactions in catalysis and synthesis. This presentation covers the synthesis of two-dimensional MoS2 using surface alloy as a virtual substrate by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The role of surface alloy during the synthesis is confirmed by comparing the reaction mechanism with metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies revealed the presence of surface alloy during the growth.
