McCulloch and Pitts proposed that the brain is composed of logic-gates. The idea of Boolean neurons had a huge effect on artificial intelligence. To investigate whether Boolean logic gates can be implemented using biological neurons, neural networks with a crossbar array structure were constructred on multi-electrodes arrays using PDMS microfluidic channels. The fluorescence optical images revealed that the crossbar array consisted of axons. The activation curves measured using the stimulus-evoked spike probability exhibited the spike timing dependent plasticity learning effects. Furthermore, reconfigurable logic gates of AND and OR were successfully implemented through learning. Most neuromorphic devices have the crossbar array structure ; thus, these studies may contribute to the development of neuromorphic studies.
