Fundamental understandings of in vivo transport and interactions of engineered nanoparticles are critical to maximizing their health benefits and minimizing their hazards in the future clinical practices. The liver and kidneys are the major organs for eliminating engineered nanoparticles. In this talk, we will present our latest understandings of how these organs interact with gold nanoparticles down to the chemical level. Furthermore, we will also demonstrate how to utilize these new understandings to enhancing the tumor targeting of nanomedicines and develop novel diagnostics for the liver and kidney injuries.
