Symposium NM06-2D Layered Materials & Heterostructures—Ubiquitous Electronics, Sensors, Multifunctional Coatings and More

Layered two-dimensional (2D) materials represent an exciting class of materials poised to revolutionize electronics, sensing, multifunctional coatings and a host of other applications due to their exceptional properties exhibited during device operation. Materials including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, group IV and V elemental materials, and heterostructures of the same are being rapidly developed for use in low power electronics, wearable sensors, point-of-care diagnostics and the internet of things, to name a few. As the technology is rapidly under development, many fundamental research challenges remain before realization of robust, high performing, reliable and fully integrated 2D material-based applications and devices.

This symposium will cover new and emerging synthesis and integration techniques for 2D materials, theory and modeling governing the electrical and sensing behavior, unique characterization techniques of 2D layered materials and devices, emerging properties for future electronics, sensing, and coating applications, and integrated devices based on 2D materials and heterostructures. Additionally, the symposium will focus on emerging 2D chemical and biological sensors and fundamental mechanisms governing interaction with specific analytes.

Interdisciplinary topics related to materials science, mechanics, physics, chemistry, and engineering will be presented by invited and contributed speakers in order to accelerate the development of this exciting class of materials and applications.

Topics will include:

  • Synthesis and processing of 2D materials and heterostructures
  • Theory and modeling of sensing and electronic properties of 2D materials
  • Unique characterization and in-situ evaluation of 2D systems
  • Fundamental mechanisms of 2D material-based chemical and biosensors
  • The potential of 2D materials in sensing COVID-19 or future variants
  • Emergent and advantageous electronic, sensing, and coating properties of 2D materials and heterostructures
  • Devices and integrated electronic/sensing platforms and future applications
