Thursday, April 27, 2023
11:00 AM - 2:30 PM
Online

Instructors: Julie Staunton, University of Warwick; Gian Guzman-Verri, University of Costa Rica; Oliver Gutfleisch, University of Darmstadt; Emmanuel Defay, Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology

This tutorial will only be available during the online portion of the 2023 MRS Spring Meeting & Exhibit.

This tutorial will cover all types of caloric material, and will range from fundamental aspects to applications of such materials in energy-efficient heating and cooling devices.

Learning objectives:

- Thermodynamics of magnetocaloric, electrocaloric and mechanocaloric materials.

- First-principle models for magnetocaloric, electrocaloric and mechanocaloric materials.

- Phenomenological models for magnetocaloric, electrocaloric and mechanocaloric materials.

- Fundamentals of hysteresis and energy dissipation.

- Key principles of solid-state refrigerant caloric materials.

- Fundamental design principles for magnetocaloric and electrocaloric heating and cooling devices.

- Key engineering aspects of magnetocaloric and electrocaloric heating and cooling devices.

- Performance metrics for caloric devices.
