Symposium N-Magnetic Nanomaterials for Biomedical and Energy Applications

The interest in magnetic materials has grown very rapidly in recent years, with enthusiasm being boosted by the many benefits envisaged for biomedical and energy applications. Multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles are expected to significantly improve the performance of currently used diagnostic and therapeutic tools allowing for early disease detection and delivery of treatment at the right place and at the right time, while minimizing unnecessary exposure through targeted therapy with a triggered release. Similarly, magnetic materials play an important role in improving the efficiency and performance of electronic devices especially for electric power generation, conditioning and conversion. This is particularly true of wind, tidal, and solar power generation where efficient AC/DC conversion is critical. However, additional challenges exist for magnetic materials especially when used for transportation technologies, where enhanced reliability, power density, and overall energy capacity are increasingly important. This symposium will focus on state-of-the-art hard and soft magnetic nanomaterials and nanostructures, with an emphasis on biomedical and energy applications. The recent advances in new materials, novel processing, advanced characterization, and breakthrough product development using magnetic nanomaterials will provide a strong basis for this symposium.

Topics will include:

  • Biomedical Applications - Magnetic fluid hyperthermia; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Magnetic targeting and drug delivery; Magnetic Particle Imaging; Sensing and diagnostics; Low loss nanocomposites operating at high frequencies
  • Energy Applications - Power generation, conversion and storage; Energy efficient electronic devices; Soft magnetic materials and their applications; Permanent magnetic materials and their applications; Magnetocaloric materials and their applications; Magnetoelectric materials and their applications
  • Materials Synthesis and Processing - Physical and chemical approaches: top-down and bottom-up routes; Control of size, shape, crystal structure, and conformation of magnetic nanomaterials and nanostructures; Processing and assembly; patterning and integration into structures
  • Structure and Characterization - Advanced microscopy and spectroscopic techniques; Theory and simulation
