Symposium E-Engineering and Application of Bioinspired Materials

Bioinspired engineering is a promising approach to generate advanced materials for various applications. Natural architecture and assembly processes offer materials scientists and engineers a sustainable path to the development of high-performance, next-generation materials and devices. There have been many exciting recent developments in bioinspired engineering of advanced structural, sensing, and energy materials, as well as adhesives, coatings, and membranes. This symposium will cover both the fundamental exploration of the synthesis, structure, and performance of materials inspired by biological systems in nature, and their applications. There will be sessions dedicated to structured materials at different length-scales for applications in functional surfaces, coatings, sensing, and energy and sessions that target the applications of bioinspired materials in photonics and electronics. We anticipate this symposium will bring together leading researchers from around the world to discuss the state-of-the-art developments in this exciting area of materials science and engineering.

Topics will include:

  • Photonic devices with biological and bio-inspired materials (joint session with the symposium E "Engineering and Application of Bio-inspired Materials")
  • Bioinspired structural materials
  • Structure-function relationships in bioinspired materials
  • Energy storage and other energy-related applications of bioinspired materials
  • Bioinspired sensing materials
  • Bioinspired coatings
  • Electronic devices with biological and bio-inspired materials
  • Surfaces and interfaces inspired by nature
  • Biomolecular and biomimetic self-assembly processes
  • Synthesis of protein-mimetics
  • Biomimetic control over formation of inorganic materials
