Tutorial QT01—Ultrafast Spectroscopy with Photons and Electrons

Summit - Seattle Convention Center, Level 4, Room 420

The tutorial session will focus on two main topics (two tutorial presentations) of ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy, two-dimensional and multidimensional spectroscopy AND ultrafast TEM, ultrafast LEED and some first ultrafast LEEM.

Thursday, April 25, 2024

1:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Summit - Seattle Convention Center, Level 4, Room 420

The tutorial session will focus on two main topics (two tutorial presentations):

• Tutorial 1: "Multidimensional Spectroscopy in Solid State Systems" covered by Daniele Brida. This tutorial will include ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy, two-dimensional and multidimensional spectroscopy.

• Tutorial 2: "Ultrafast Electron Microscopy and Diffraction" covered by Claus Ropers. This tutorial will include ultrafast TEM, ultrafast LEED and some first ultrafast LEEM.

Both topics are intimately related to the main focus of the symposium, that is, Ultrafast Light-Matter Interactions in Quantum Materials

The learning objectives will include:

  • Understanding the foundations and the key concepts of time-resolved spectroscopy and microscopy
  • Understanding the basic building blocks of a time-resolved spectroscopy setup
  • Understanding the quantities measured in a pump-probe experiment and how they can provide information about the fundamental properties of condensed matter
  • Understanding pump-probe spectroscopy and microscopy with photons
  • Understanding pump-probe spectroscopy with photons and with electrons
  • Learning real case studies, examples will include visible and infrared light spectroscopy, multidimensional spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction and more
