2025 MRS Fall Meeting & Exhibit
Symposium SF08-Functional Films and Adhesives
Multifunctional films are a key enabling technology for various industrial application areas, such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and consumer products. They are highly relevant in energy harvesting and storage systems, such as batteries, fuel cells or photovoltaic systems, in separation technologies, e.g. desalination or gas separation, or in electronic displays. Adhesives are a special class of functional polymers, which are used to bond shaped bodies potentially consisting of different materials. They are often applied as adhesive tapes with complex multilayer designs. This symposium addresses the molecular design, processing, especially coating, and characterization of such functional polymers. The critical theoretical and experimental understanding of molecular adhesion is essential for technological advancement. The symposium will also explore digital technologies for predicting film and adhesive behavior, including digital twins and additive manufacturing methods. Finally, sustainability aspects, such as disassembly and rebonding technologies, the synthesis of multifunctional films using CO2 neutral or bio-based starting materials, and solvent-free industrial manufacturing processes are also in focus of this symposium. Experts from academia, research institutes and industry from the various relevant disciplines are intended to be brought together in this Symposium to exchange experiences and present technical approaches that have the potential to contribute to the design of novel attractive product ideas with innovative combinations of functionality.
