Symposium SF07-Frontiers of Intermetallics Science for Structural and Functional Materials Design

This symposium will focus on multi-scale science of structures and defects of intermetallics and their effects on properties for advanced structural and functional intermetallic-based alloys. Topics of interest broadly include: advanced processing along with additive manufacturing; next generation alloys (with higher temperature mechanical and/or environmental capabilities); functional alloys (shape memory, catalysis, magnetic, thermoelectric, etc.); fundamentals of phase stability and their effects on microstructural design and microstructural degradation in extreme environments/service; physical and mechanical response to various loading conditions and the role of defects in influencing them; informatics, modeling and simulation on novel approaches of alloy development; advanced characterization techniques (HAADF-STEM, APT, ARPES, neutron and synchrotron studies, micropillar experiments, in-situ investigation methods, etc.) and technological considerations for successful commercial applications. Intermetallic phases of interest include aluminides, silicides, Laves phases, Heusler phases, and various other geometrically-, topologically- and close-packed compounds. From an applications perspective, presentations related to intermetallic compounds intended for structural and functional applications, including high temperature use in the aerospace and automotive industries, will be considered. Applications for fossil fuel and nuclear industries, energy conversion and storage, ferromagnetic, catalysis, medical, and thermoelectric power will also be considered.

  • Deformation, fracture and underlying mechanisms
  • Advanced processing techniques including additive manufacturing
  • Advanced characterization techniques on an atomic level

  • Intermetallic composites and novel superalloys
  • Computation and modeling studies related to intermetallic-based alloys
  • Shape memory, catalysis, magnetic, thermoelectric, energy storage and medical applications
  • Recent applications in the aircraft, automotive and other industries
