Symposium EP11-Hybrid Materials and Devices for Enhanced Light-Matter Interactions

Hybrid materials and devices comprising metals, semiconductors, dielectrics and/or molecular aggregates and exploiting photonic structures for enhancing light-matter interactions are essential for many important technologies and applications, such as photovoltaic, photocatalysis, ultrafast optical switches and modulators, nonlinear frequency generation. In recent years, there has also been rapid progress in quantum-optical materials and devices exploiting quantum electrodynamics and topological photonics for on-chip solid-state qubit architectures. Developments in all of these fields are facilitated by more comprehensive understanding and optimizations of light-matter interactions in various hybrid materials and devices. This symposium is dedicated to the broad range of hybrid materials and devices exploiting enhanced light-matter interactions. Subjects to be discussed in this symposium will include recent developments of novel plasmonic materials and metamaterials, topological photonics, photonic microcavities, and their interactions with optically active materials with excitonic, phononic, and/or intersubband excitations. Light-matter interaction enhanced physical processes and their applications in photovoltaics and photocatalysis will also be a focus. In addition, this symposium will cover material systems exploiting exciting phenomena such as strong photon-photon interactions and many-body behavior of strongly correlated systems, as well as emerging strategies that are needed in the creation of new hybrid materials and devices with advanced functionalities.

Topics will include:

  • Emerging plasmonic materials and fabrication
  • Metamaterials and metasurfaces
  • Exciton and phonon polaritons in low-dimensional materials
  • Topological photonics
  • Ultrafast and nonlinear effects in hybrid materials and devices
  • Cavity quantum electrodynamics based on photonic nanostructures
  • Surface plasmon/microcavity-mediated coupling and entanglement
  • Light-matter interaction enhanced chemical reactions
  • Light-matter interactions in many-body strongly correlated systems
