2018 MRS Spring Meeting
Symposium NM10-Nanometallic Materials by Design
Nanometallic materials (NMMs) are metal-based solids composed of constituents whose dimensions are ~100nm or less. Examples of NMMs are polycrystals with nano-scale grains, metallic nano-layered composites, and nanoporous metals made by dealloying. Many NMMs present significant advantages over conventional coarse-grained metals, such as high strength, radiation resistance, and high fatigue limits. Some also possess unique functionalities, such as electrochemical actuation and tunability of mechanical properties. Moreover, advanced computational techniques are creating opportunities for the design of novel NMMs. The structure and properties of NMMs depend on confinement of crystal defects to nano-scale volumes, the morphology and connectivity of NMM constituents, and the character of the interfaces between constituents, providing numerous potential avenues for NMM design.
This symposium will provide a forum for presenting cutting-edge research on the structure, properties, design, and potential applications of NMMs.
Topics will include:
- Synthesis and processing of NMMs
- Design and optimization of NMMs
- Structural characterization of NMMs at all length scales
- Thermo-mechanical properties of NMMs
- NMM behavior under irradiation and in chemically active environments
- Structural and functional applications of NMMs
- Multi-scale and multi-physics modeling of NMMs
