Symposium EN06-Safer and More Energy-Dense Rechargeable Batteries

Rechargeable alkali-ion batteries are the dominant form of energy storage for consumer electronics today and are increasingly finding large-scale applications such as transportation and grid storage. However, the recent spate of highly publicized lithium-ion battery fires in automotive, aviation, and consumer electronics have brought to the fore the need to develop novel materials and battery architectures that can support higher energy densities without sacrificing safety.

This symposium will promote a holistic approach to developing safer and more energy dense rechargeable alkali-ion batteries by providing a forum for technical, interdisciplinary discussions spanning the entire continuum from materials design to device engineering. The symposium will cover novel materials discovery, characterization and fundamental understanding of safety, and cutting-edge battery architectures.

A complementary suite of activities focusing on battery safety, student engagement, and public outreach is tentatively planned

Topics will include:

  • Materials design for safer lithium and sodium-ion batteries
  • All-solid-state alkali-ion batteries
  • Novel liquid electrolyte formulations for high safety and voltage
  • Advances in enabling Li metal anodes
  • Understanding solid-solid and solid-liquid interfaces
  • Novel architectures for battery design
  • Understanding battery safety and mechanisms of failure
  • Computational modelling and design of materials and devices
