Symposium EN02-Advances in Perovskite Solar Cell Devices and Applications

The heat wave of organic-inorganic perovskite materials and solar cell devices continues. We have seen several new trends in the perovskite solar cell field. Stability is among the utmost challenges for perovskite solar cells, and has captured a considerable amount of research attention. Although the current state of the art is still far from the eventual goal (e.g. stability under realistic operation conditions for multiple years), deepened understanding of degradation mechanisms and improved cell stability reported in recent publications do suggest that long-term stability could be achievable. Another important research trend is the development of fabrication technologies (e.g., slot die coating, spray coating, chemical vapor deposition, etc.), which paves the way towards large-area perovskite solar cells and modules with minimal device-to-device variations and therefore is essential for this technology to be industrialized. In terms of new materials derived from perovskites, recent breakthroughs on Sn-Pb based low bandgap perovskite absorbers has opened up opportunities for ultrahigh-efficiency tandem devices based on perovskites using solution processing. It is also worth mentioning that there has been intense research focusing on mixed dimensional perovskite materials because of their potential advantages, such as removal or reduced use of the toxic element Pb in conventional perovskites, enhanced stability by structural and compositional optimization and new functionalities as a result of tunable electronic properties (e.g., adjustable bandgap, quantum confinement of charge carriers). Together, these advances will create a critical momentum to promote perovskite solar cells from lab scale experimentation towards industrial scale application. This symposium will be an ideal forum for researchers in the field to present their progress, exchange views, and identify future research topics. The rapid development of perovskite materials and solar cell devices in the past few years will be the strong foundation for this symposium.
