An important route to new, multifunctional materials involves engineering the organization of collections of particles into structures with precision and programmability. Achieving this is challenging when the structure required to obtain a particular combination of properties must simultaneously incorporate order and disorder, as well as be hierarchically organized. In this talk we discuss strategies for engineering material complexity into systems of particles, informed by computer simulations.
