Phototherapy, includes photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT), which combine light with an adequate wavelength and a chemical phototheranostic agent in the absence or presence of oxygen, possesses substantial potential for cancer treatment. Recent contributions from our group for this topic will be presented; an ER-targeted and viscosity-sensitive hemicyanine dye for the diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver and photodynamic therapy by activating pyroptosis pathway, conversion of albumin into a BODIPY-like photosensitizer by a flick reaction, tumor accumulation and photodynamic therapy, a renal clearable nano-assembly with Förster Resonance Energy Transfer amplified superoxide radical and heat generation to overcome hypoxia resistance in phototherapeutics, supramolecular phthalocyanine assemblies-enhanced synergistic photodynamic and photothermal therapy guided by photoacoustic imaging.
