The research and development of lithium sulfur batteries have been decades, yet we still do not see its commericalization success. In this talk, I will give an examination of the literature and discuss the remaining scientific hurdles and technical chanllenges. With the advancement in all solid state batteries, our group has develped an unique apporach in enabling lithium sulfur electrochemistry with solid state electrolytes. The progress made was enabled by fundamental understanding of the interfacial sciences and new scientific tools such as cryogenic micrsocopy and advanced spectroscopy.
