Symposium F.SF01-Materials for Extreme Conditions (MEC)

This symposium will focus on understanding mechanical behavior, structural stability, transport properties, electronic/magnetic ordering and exotic properties of materials under extreme environments. The major topics are the studies of materials under high pressure, high/low temperature, external electric/magnetic fields and high strain loading. The achievements in these areas are related to a great progress in generating extreme environments, which are only achievable through the use of specialized materials. To do so, not only high strength materials but also multiple functional materials are needed because the extreme environments often involve multiple dimensions. All these add to the complexity in understanding the performance of materials. In fact, stability and phase transition, strength, and transport property studies of materials under extreme environments have attracted extensive researches in both basic and applied sciences for exploring the fundamental physical/chemical mechanisms and providing guidance for future material developments. Thus, it is important to understand the behavior of materials used to achieve extreme environments and to develop new approaches to attaining the required properties in order to avoid catastrophic failure of the components under extreme conditions and to increase the available choice of materials, processing routes, and material dimensions available to designers and users for applications to the extreme environments. We expect to bring together researchers from broader materials communities to explore the novel functional materials under these extreme conditions.

Topics will include:

  • Superhard and ultra high-strength materials synthesized under high pressure and high magnetic field
  • Nanomaterials and composited materials under stress, pressure and magnetic fields
  • Energy materials under extreme conditions
  • Novel high-pressure materials with modified chemical bonding and composition
  • High-temperature superconductors under high pressure and/or magnetic fields
  • Theoretical modeling and prediction, advanced characterization and instrumentation
  • High strength material requirements for high field magnets
  • High strength conductors, insulation and structure materials for high field magnets
  • Material processing and first order phase transformation in high field magnets
  • Material deformation under high field magnets or cryogenic temperatures
