Opportunities to Volunteer at MRS Meetings

The following opportunities offer students and post-docs unique experiences at the 2019 MRS Spring Meeting, plus:

  • Reimbursement of the student preregistration fee
  • FREE one-year MRS student membership commencing July 1, 2019
  • A stipend

Career Central Volunteers

Career Central registration desk at an MRS MeetingVolunteer are needed to help out in multiple capacities at the Career Center during MRS Spring and Fall Meetings.  Students and young professionals are encouraged to sign up for one or multiple time-slots to help out onsite during Career Fair hours. Opportunities include:

Professional Development Assistants
Volunteers will assist Career Fair staff by keeping mock interview, resume critique and journal review candidates on schedule, escorting them to the interviewer/reviewer/editor at the scheduled time, and tracking scheduled participant attendance. Sign up now »

Materials Voice Booth—Call for Student Volunteers

Two women stand behind the Materials Voice counterSeveral student volunteers are needed to staff the Materials Voice booth.

Energetic student volunteers will encourage passers-by to send an email from the booth to their US Congressional representatives regarding matters of importance to the scientific community.

Booth hours are 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, and 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, Wednesday. Each volunteer will work a minimum of 13 hours. The stipend is $10/hour. If volunteers work less than 13 hours, they will not qualify for the preregistration reimbursement or free membership; however, they will receive the stipend for hours worked. Respond early to receive your preferred shifts.

Interested students should email Donna Gillespie at gillespie@mrs.org no later than March 8, 2019. Each placement will be assigned via email. Specific work hours will be assigned, and each volunteer will be required to sign a short work agreement outlining the work assignment and compensation.   

MRS Meeting Scene—Call for Reporters and Bloggers

Graduate students and post-docs who are interested in contributing to the Meeting Scene newsletter and the Meeting Blog for the full week of the 2019 MRS Spring Meeting are encouraged to apply. 

Reporters will be required to attend talks in a variety of symposia and write brief summaries (100-250 words) of four talks each day; bloggers will be required to post at least five items per day and also tweet about their experiences at the meeting. The stipend is $50 for the week.

To apply, please send an email to newseditor@mrs.org stating your qualifications and your reasons for wanting to report or blog for us. We need only four reporters and four bloggers, so we will not be able to accept everyone who applies. Apply now! We look forward to hearing from you! 

Symposium Assistant Positions

Graduate students who are interested in assisting in the symposium sessions during the 2019 MRS Spring Meeting are encouraged to apply for a symposium assistant position.

Symposium assistants deliver essential meeting materials to the technical session rooms, monitor audio-visual equipment and room lighting, track and record attendance and perform other tasks requested by the session chairs.

By assisting in a minimum of four half-day sessions, students will earn a complimentary student registration, a one-year MRS student membership commencing July 1, 2019, and a stipend to help defray expenses. Positions are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
