MRS PREM Research Scholars Summit

A student reviews a posterMRS is committed to building a diverse community of materials scientists, from students to faculty, industry and government professionals.

We believe that diverse talent can be developed with:

  • Effective mentoring
  • Interaction with role models
  • Opportunities to present and discuss research projects in a professional setting
  • Network-building through positive involvement in organizations that promote materials research such as MRS

This year, MRS is pleased to collaborate with the NSF to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) program!

In conjunction with the 2019 MRS Fall Meeting & Exhibit, undergraduate and graduate scholars are invited to participate in the MRS PREM Research Scholars Summit, starting Tuesday, December 3.

The program will provide opportunities for student scholars to engage with their fellow materials researchers—from undergraduate and graduate students to PhD-level scientists and engineers— and to meet key stakeholders within the materials community.

Please download, complete, and save the application.
Email completed form to no later than Friday, October 25.

Once at the Meeting, students will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of mentoring, leadership, and professional development sessions, and to present their research contributions to the broader scientific community during the Wednesday evening Poster Session.

Participating students will also be encouraged to attend symposia, visit the Public Outreach Center and Career Fair, and take part in other relevant activities to learn more about different fields within materials science and engineering.

Mentors will be paired with one or two students before the Summit and are expected to meet with their assigned mentees virtually before the Summit at least once.  During the Meeting, mentors will be expected to attend the Women's Breakfast (Wednesday 7:00 am-9:30 am) and the PREM Poster Session (Wednesday 8:00pm-10:00pm).  We encourage mentors to attend other events of this program (Tuesday 6pm-8pm) and to interact with their mentees as much as possible throughout the Meeting.  Unfortunately, at this point in time, the program cannot provide any travel or registration support for mentors.

Why Get Involved?

Students will benefit by:

  • Being matched with a mentor who can provide guidance and support
  • Broadening their knowledge and interest in materials research through 50+ symposia
  • Practicing their poster presentation skills and gaining exposure to MRS Meeting attendees from around the world during the poster session
  • Preparing for a career in materials science and engineering  by attending professional development sessions on a wide range of topics
  • Networking with a diverse global community of materials researchers to share ideas and enhance career opportunities.
