Symposium NM05-Challenges and Opportunities in Solution Synthesis of Functional Nanomaterials

Solution synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials has seen impressive developments, both in the fundamental understanding of nucleation, growth and surface chemistry, and in the targeted design of functional materials for real-world applications. The improvements in synthetic control enable scalable syntheses of nanomaterials with near-atomic precision. Nanomaterial size, shape, composition, and interfaces can be used for development of new catalysis, optoelectronic devices, energy storage and conversion, and biomedicine. Advanced characterization techniques provide novel insights into materials structure and dynamics, while in situ methods can be used for understanding nucleation and growth mechanisms. These advances empower rational design of functional nanomaterials. On the other hand, high-throughput screening of reaction parameter space using robotic platforms and artificial intelligence algorithms show promise for combinatorial optimization of functional nanomaterials, discovery of new structures, as well as development of experimental and computational methodology.

This symposium will bring together experts in solution synthesis, advanced characterization, synthesis automation, fabrication of nanoparticle-based functional materials and devices, as well as theory and computation. Our goal is to highlight recent developments in inorganic nanomaterial synthesis and modelling and discuss opportunities for atom- and cost-efficient material design.

  • Nucleation and growth of nanocrystals in solution
  • Synthesis of novel nanostructures by solution methods
  • Surface chemistry of solution-synthesized nanomaterials
  • Modeling and automation of solution synthesis
  • Advanced characterizations of colloidal nanomaterials
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) approaches for synthesis optimization and material discovery
  • Self-assembly phenomena in solution synthesis of nanomaterials
  • A tutorial complementing this symposium is tentatively planned.
