Symposium EQ03-Plasmonics, Nanophotonics and Metamaterials—From Design to Applications

This symposium addresses emerging topics in plasmonics, nanophotonics, metamaterials, and metasurfaces to overcome existing limitations that prevent the development of practical photonic devices. The symposium seeks to provide a general overview of recent advances in new design concepts and material platforms, including fabrication techniques and promising applications enabled by the new developments. Novel approaches in plasmonics and metasurfaces promise the generation, processing, sensing, and detection of signals at the nanometer scale with great potential in a wide range of fields, including photovoltaics, optical communications, quantum information processing, bioimaging, lighting, sensing, chemistry, and medicine. The recent discovery of new plasmonic materials and layered two-dimensional materials with low loss, tunable optical properties, and CMOS compatibility can enable a breakthrough in the field of nanophotonics, optical metamaterials, and their applications. Novel nonlinear and quantum phenomena and advanced design based on machine-learning strategies and new simulation methods for metasurface, metamaterial, and plasmonic materials/devices are also of interest to this symposium.

Topics will include:

  • Plasmonics, advanced nanophotonics, metasurfaces, quantum plasmonics, and metaphotonics
  • Alternative plasmonic, epsilon-near-zero materials, 2D photonics
  • Radiation engineering using plasmonics, the design strategies for advanced nanophotonics
  • Tunable metasystems, nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics in metaphotonics and plasmonics
  • Topological photonic and parity-time symmetric materials
  • Biological and chemical sensing with plasmonics and nanophotonics
  • Photovoltaic applications, efficient light-harvesting, and thermo-plasmonics
  • Novel fabrication techniques for improving plasmonic/metasurface properties
  • Plasmonic hot-carriers for photodetection and solar-energy-harvesting devices
  • A tutorial complementing this symposium is tentatively planned.
