Symposium F.BI01—Early-Career Development—Insights from Academia and Industry
There are several unknowns when it comes to finding a job in academia or industry that fits one’s skills and passions. Even after landing the desired position, a significant amount of learning is required to become a successful professional.
This symposium will help the next generation of professionals in academia and industry by providing technical instructions on different aspects of career development. Technical guidance on job application steps for both academia and industry will be presented. Insights on successful proposal writing from funding agencies program directors and Early Career/Young Investigator winners will be provided. Editors from leading journals will share their vision on writing impactful papers, followed by a panel discussion. Professionals at all stages of their career are invited to share their successes and failures, and their experiences in surmounting them. This symposium will also include talks on novel and successful teaching and mentoring strategies.
Direct interaction with the attendee of the symposium will be promoted in panel discussions around:
(1) Early career mobility, addressing issues such as: should I move? When is it a good time? What issues am I likely to face? How to get funding?
(2) Industry versus academia: should I do a postdoc? How to shift from industry to academia and vice versa? Is my profile more suited for industry or academia? An informal networking session will be organized at the end of the symposium.
