Sheng Dai has been elected fellow of the Materials Research Society. Dai, leader of the Nanomaterials Chemistry group in ORNL’s Chemical Sciences Division, was cited “for significant and sustained contributions in pioneering and developing novel synthetic methods for functional carbon materials for energy applications.”

Dr. Wang specializes in thin film epitaxy, nanocomposite designs and functional materials for high temperature superconductors, solid oxide fuel cells, multiferroics, spintronics, plasmonics and optics.

A 2016 report from the American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society, and the Materials Research Society estimated that 400 U.S. research groups, mostly in the physical sciences, rely on liquid helium for experiments. In addition, research groups that use liquid-helium-enabled instrumentation, such as NMR spectrometers and superconducting quantum interference devices, number in the thousands.

Although previous research shows that metal nanoparticles have properties useful for various biomedical applications, many mysteries remain regarding how these tiny materials form, including the processes that generate size variations. To crack this case, a team of scientists turned to computational sleuthing tactics.

Hongyou Fan, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at The University of New Mexico, has been selected for the 2019 Mid-Career Researcher Award by the Materials Research Society.  This award recognizes exceptional achievements in materials research made by those in the middle of their careers, as well as notable leadership in the materials area.

Susan Trolier-McKinstry, an MRS Past President and the Steward S. Flaschen Professor of Ceramic Science and Engineering, Penn State, has been named a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

Dr. Monica Jung de Andrade, a research scientist at the Alan G. MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute, has been appointed to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Materials Research Society (MRS), an international professional organization of more than 14,500 materials researchers from academia, industry and government.

Aaswath Raman, an assistant professor at UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, was among 126 outstanding young researchers selected to receive a 2019 Sloan Research Fellowship, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced today. Raman was most recently selected by MRS for the inaugural Nelson “Buck” Robinson Science and Technology Award for Renewable Energy, which recognizes an early-career professional for the development of novel sustainable solutions for the realization of renewable sources of energy.

A trio of students from a couple of Five Towns high schools presented their research projects at the Materials Research Society meeting at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston on Nov. 25 to 30.
